Good solid folding bike, great value, one big flaw

I wanted to start bicycling in to work (first, to reduce my exposure to the obnoxious drivers on my commute route, and second to get some more exercise). So I looked around for a folding bike that I could plunk down into the trunk of my car and not have the hassle of roof racks, huge frames, etc.
There are a lot of very good designs out there, with the key features being a center locking fold hinge, fold down handlebars, long necked seat, and multiple speeds. The Tempest bike has all these. For a steel frame bike, it is pretty light. UPS shipping showed a total weight of 30 lbs., so after removing the cartons, it weighs in around 27 lbs. That's good, even compared to alloy frame bikes.
The bike comes folded, and it very easy to put together. Just remove the packaging (everything is wrapped nicely), put on the pedals, tighten the brake handles, and that's about it. It shifted and braked properly without any adjustments needed. The one page "User Manual" is more amusing than useful, with Step 2 of the fold up instructions saying "Swing the pedal towards forward", for example. It is very easy to fold up, and quite compact when folded.
The bike has no decals or any names on it. I got the white model, which is pretty sharp, as the handlebars, seat post, and seat are black, as are the tires, so the black/white contrast looks good. The little rack on the back is very useful, as are the fenders, which extend far down, and thus offer a lot of protection.
I found the handlebars very difficult to adjust, as there is a plastic sleeve into which the handlebar post fits, and this moves with the handlebars when you are trying to adjust them. I had to remove the whole handlebar, with the sleeve, then adjust the sleeve, then reinsert it trying to keep the sleeve from moving. But once it is set, it isn't really disturbed anymore, as the bars just fold downward when folding.
The one big flaw also has to do with that folding handlebar hinge. The latching mechanism is substandard, and the mating surfaces are just raw cuts. So the hinge squeaks relentlessly. I tried all manner of adjusting it, but with no relief. Kinda takes away from the charm of gliding along a quiet trail, with the bike creaking like a 30 year old bike.
The 6 speeds are great to have. I ride a mix of paved roads and bike pathways (one long one along a canal), and the top speed is very good for cooking along at a good clip, but it is also very useful to have the very low gears to climb the occasional hill (that's why I prefer the 6 speed over the single speed models I saw). The Shimano shifter works very well with sure, solid shifts. The seat is nothing special, and will be replaced shortly with a better one, as it is pretty hard.
One thing you will find is that you'll get a lot of bemused grins from other bicyclists. I find the $3000 bikers very nonplussed at having a folding bike sharing the path with them! But I am 6', 180 lbs. and this bike fits me perfectly, both in terms of seat and handlebar height (they are at the same height as on my 26" street bike). Most people are very interested in how well "such a little bike" moves along, and I really enjoy riding something with such innovative design and utility. I've ridden both a 26" mountain bike and this bike on my commute now, and prefer this folding bike for the ease of use, maneuverability, and smooth operation.
All in all, this bike is a good value.

An excellent folding bike

This is my third folding bike and of the three it is the easiest to fold and carry. I am particularly pleased with manner in which the handle bars fold down out of the way. My only complaint is that the seat (the saddle of which needs to be replaced immediately) which seems to slide down no matter how tightly it is held in place. I also had to replace the front tire and tube as the tube was leaking around the stem when it arrived. The derailleur needed to be adjusted which I did before riding it the first time (it was way out of tune upon arrival). I bought this for my wife and she will test it over the 4th. I have already given it a test drive of 4 miles and it seemed to work flawlessly. For myself, I prefer the Columba 26 which is more conventional in size and a bit more difficult to fit into my Prius.

Very good folding bike

I wanted a bike I could ride around the neighborhood with my dog, we both need the exercise. I also wanted something I could easily take to area parks but didn't want the hassle (or expense) of a bike rack. This folding bike works very well for both uses. It's perfect for quick jaunts around our development and fits easily in my subaru outback.
One of the things I really like about the bike that I didn't actually think about before purchasing is the included rack. It's very convenient for carrying stuff. Without it I'd really need to wear a backpack.
The bike comes almost completely assembled, I just put the seat on and pumped up the tires. I also lubed the chain and made a few adjustments to the gears before starting off, very minor setup. It rides very nice. I was worried about stability on small wheels but it's actually quite stable and handles very well. The gearing is enough to deal with moderate hills. It folds fairly easily. I don't have much to compare the weight to but it's certainly not heavy.
I would highly recommend this bike to anyone in the market for a folding bike. I looked at quite a few before purchasing. I doubt you'll find another (especially with rack and fenders) for this price. A great bike.
