Love my Dahon Mu N-360

I spent 3 months shopping around for folding bikes. To be honest, I loved Brompton, but ended up with a Dahon and don't regret it.
Why?
Most people say price, but in this case the N-360 isn't much cheaper than a Brompton.
Really it was the Nuvinci N-360 CVT. I admit it's new technology for bicycles and I wanted to try it out. I enjoyed it so much I never sent it back.
There are no gears. It's smooth transition through all possible torque ranges. Even more surprising is the torque range the N-360 provides, it's as wide if not wider than their high-end gear box. Even better is that you can change your torque ratio anywhere anytime. Stopped at a light, while going up a steep incline -- no problem! You don't have to worry about popping your chain during gear change, or worse knocking teeth of your sprockets during a high-torque change.
One downside is that it's heavier than most gear systems, but once I'm riding I don't notice. As my girlfriend put it, "It feels like this bike does 1/2 the work for me". It's still quite a bit lighter than most electric bikes I've tried.
Some of the things I love about the Mu frame is that the newer generation folds so much better than older Dahon. While it's not quite as compact at Brompton, it's noticeably more compact than previous generation Dahon and other folding bikes that I tried. That being it took a little practice to get the cables to sit right, but that was more user issue than bike issue. :-)
Also, the 20inch wheels have a more stable feel than standard 16inch ones found on Brompton. Really this isn't a big deal to me, but it's still a big difference and worth mentioning.
I've had my Mu N-360 for 3 months now, and I still love it.
If you have the opportunity, try one. I can't guarantee you'll love it, but it's worth checking out.

Built to a budget

I owned a Dahon Mu XL Sport for 3 years before buying this. It was stolen. I was sad that it was stolen, because I grew to love it despite its many flaws. I commute regularly in and around San Francisco and use the bike most days. This one arrived yesterday and due to a public transit failure, I just rode it 13 miles to work. This is my review...
I put a lot of miles on my old Mu and this one is basically the same. The old one had an 8 speed internal Shimano hub, which I'm surprised Dahon don't still use as it's an excellent hub - many people don't want to have to deal with derailleurs on a folding bike - think oil on your clothes for a start. I used to hurl the bike around the city and the gears gave me the confidence to tackle any hill. I liked the riding position, it folded super quickly and I would happily ride it 10-20 miles if needed.
However, what I was not impressed by was the build quality on my Mu. Over the 3 years I had it, I had to get both wheels rebuilt due to broken spokes - I'm 180lbs and wasn't jumping off curbs. The frame clasp required constant tightening because the aluminum tabs wear away and cause significant play in the hinge. The front fork bearing required regular adjustment, things were constantly coming loose etc. With the rebuilt wheels and some component upgrades though, it was a decent bike.
When this one arrived yesterday, I rolled my eyes a little because I can see I'm going to have all of the same problems. The front wheel on the one I was sent is not even quite true from the factory! The pedals are very cheap and have a surprising amount of resistance. The internal seat post pump is a great addition, but it feels flimsy to the point where I'll only use it for emergencies. The tires on this are nowhere near as nice as the Schwable Kojaks. The only improvements really are the brake levers, the saddle and the catch on the forks (to stop it folding itself).
Annoyingly, this one also doesn't fold as neatly as my last one. With this one, you have to rotate the bar so that the brake levers point up and also tilt the saddle at an angle. I'm happy to live with that though. The fold is still quicker than a Brompton.
The reason I bought this model (other than having to replace my old one) was the Nuvinci gearing. I've been fascinated by it, both as an engineer and as someone who prefers to pedal at a constant speed and let the gears do the work. On my ride into work this morning, I can see that this is going to work very nicely for me. It allows me to always be in the "sweet spot", the range of gears from low to high is pretty much spot-on, it shifts seamlessly, it should be zero maintainance and it's not as heavy as I'd feared. Time will tell how it holds up as it's still relatively new technology.
What's frustrating to me is that this feels like a bike built to a budget... but when the budget is over $1000 I want something a bit better. I did try the Brompton, which is beautifully engineered, but I just couldn't live with the gearing. 2x3 speeds where each gear is even further apart than the old Sturmey Archer 3 speeds is just hopeless in a city with every type of hill imaginable. Yes all the fixie riders will tell me to just man-up, but I know what I like.

A magically smooth ride

I have owned this bicycle for a few weeks now and I like it better today than the day I first bought it.
The NuVinci system is a huge upgrade to any other bicycle gear system. It shifts smoothly through the entire range. I love being able to change "gears" without changing my cadence. I previously used a Nexus 7-speed IGH system and didn't care on how I had to "lighten up" on my pedaling to allow the Nexus system to change gears.
Similar to other folding bikes, the Dahon Mu N360 allows you to adjust the saddle and handlebars to many positions. I keep the bars low for speed and raise them up when I want a more comfortable upright position. The open-chainstay frame on the Dahon Mu also allows you to easily upgrade this bike to a carbon belt-drive system.
The bike folds up easily and fits in my car trunk. I'd argue that it will fit nicely in the back of even the smallest vehicles.
Also worth mentioning is how beautiful the finish of this paint color is.
Sure, you can purchase a less expensive folding bike...but I don't think you can get anything with such a great drivetrain as the NuVinci system. In summary...it's a great folding bike with an incredibly smooth transmission. I know it is expensive but I found it to be worth every penny.
